Description
Poultry Developer / Layer Grit (typically insoluble crushed granite) is a coarse, insoluble rock supplement given to growing and adult chickens (developers and laying hens) to aid in digestion.
Because chickens do not have teeth to chew their food, they store grit in their gizzard—a muscular organ that uses the hard stone particles to grind up whole grains, coarse feed, fibrous forage, seeds, and insects so the nutrients can be properly absorbed.
Crushed granite can also be used a soil amendment in order to promote drainage and prevent compaction in potting soil mixes. Certain cactus and succulent soils benefit from the addition of crushed granite since it holds no moisture and allows for sharp drainage.
