Rain barrels are a great way to passively collect rainwater for use in and around the house. Rain is great for plants since it's naturally soft water, slightly acidic, and actually contains nitrates in the form of nitric acid. Plants use nitrates for growth and the form of nitrogen found in rainwater is especially available to plants. Rainwater is also free from the purifying compounds found in municipal water supplies and is much better for soil microbiology.
